1. What made you decide to create a bondage site? Does your site have a theme?
Although I've always liked bondage myself, I never actually thought about creating a bondage website and making my living out of it. In 2012, I worked in a studio in Hollywood while they were shooting a movie called "Discipline", which has a BDSM subject. So I worked on that movie as key grip, not big deal, but I got the contacts with my first models, it was when I decided to produce my first bondage material. Hollyrope's theme is a classic "damsel in distress" bondage style, as tasteful as possible, with cute good looking models, most of them are not fetish models but glam and fashion models. I'm super picky selecting models.
2. How much work goes into running your bondage site? What does it entail?
I have never worked this hard in my entire life! Basically since day 1, I have never taken a day off; that's over 4 years working everyday. There's always something to do, mainly editing videos, which is what consumes more time. I usually work till 3 or 4 am. People might believe this is the best job in the world, tying the girls and have fun, but that's just 10% of the job. The other 90% is really tiring and not as great as people might think
3. How much work goes into preparing for one of your bondage shoots?
Depending on how complicated is the shoot. If the script has many dialogues, special outfits or locations. The more models you have in the video, the harder it is to set the shoot. Usually after receiving the script from the customer, it takes me a week before the actual shoot. The largest shoot I've done was with 15 models, that took me about 3 months to prepare.
4. How do you decide what outfits or positions will be used for one of your shoots?
Most of the shoots are custom videos, so it is the customer who decides all that: outfits, bondage style, dialogue, etc... When I shoot videos exclusive for Hollyrope.com, I decide the outfits depending on what sells better. Usually a video with the girls wearing satin blouses will sell more than a video of the girls wearing regular street clothes, and, at least in my site, it will even sell better than nudity for some reason. I'm trying to keep a balance though and produce video as varied as possible.
5. How do you find your models?
As I mentioned before, I met my first models during the shoot of the movie where I worked. Then these models recomended me to their friends and my book of contacts grew bigger and bigger. I don't like to contact models online in sites like Craigslist or those models sites. I've had really bad experiences and that's kinda dangerous, especially because you don't know if the girl who responds to an ad or a casting call is really a professional or if she's got issues. I learned that in a bad way. I'm extremely careful with the people I get involved in my site. So recomendations is the best way to find reliable models.
6. Why did you opt to just have a clips store as opposed to a site that offers clips and still photography?
Actually Hollyrope started as a photography site. In the first months, I only offered still photography in my site and sales were really slow. Truth is that photos are not a business anymore. Now I only take still pictures for advertising purposes.
7. What has been the most memorable moment for you out of all the shoots you’ve done?
Definitely the video "15 Slaves", so far the largest commercial bondage production ever made. The video was a huge success and I received positive comments from important people like Jon Woods or Jim Hunter. I'm really proud of that video.
8. What is your policy about models bringing escorts or chaperones to your bondage photoshoots?
Although as a producer it bothers me to have a stranger in the set while we shoot, I do completely understand the models' need to be safe. In today's world, anybody can buy a camera and claim to be a producer, and unfortunately there's a lot of bad people out there. I do encourage models to take their safety measures seriously. I recommend them especially to shoot only with professional producers with a well known website or reputation in the industry, a real portfolio and references. But if their safety meassure is to bring an escort to the shoot, I do respect that and I won't deny them their right to be safe. There was a very sad and famous case about a killer named Harvey Glatman, who precisely used to contact models for bondage shoots as a trap to commit his crimes. We don't want that to happen ever again, so I do encourage models to take the precautions they consider neccesary to be safe... by the way, very rarely I've had a model with an escort. Since pretty much all the models I work with were recommended by another model, they trust me and they can check my references and my work before taking the job. Advice to the models or girls who want to model: don't shoot with strangers -- if they don't have a website or references, be careful!
9. What is the dream shoot you have not yet done during your career as a rigger and site producer?
Although I basically have done pretty much all the bondage scenarios I always wanted to do, there's a couple of ideas I still want to do: one of them is to have a classroom full with sexy schoolgirls during a "bondage class". Eventually I'll make it happen.
10. What are your favorites: gags, type of restraint, outfit, and bondage position for the model?
My personal favorite is the wraparound gag, but some of my models are not completely okay with that. I've been practicing that gag during the last year so I'm very skillful at gagging models with wraparoung tape gag. To tie the girls, I like rope, duct tape or zip ties; any of them are good to me, as long as the model is really restrained and can't get free. On the other hand, I don't really like handcuffs. I like elegant outfits for the models, sexy dresses, and I also enjoy models wearing bikinis. The hogtie must be my favorite position to tie the models.
11. How did you acquire your technique for rigging and photography?
Before the first shoot, about 4 years ago, I took a couple of bondage lessons with a British dominatrix called Nina Payne. Also I went to a bondage demostration with Nikki Nefarious (the redhead that ties everybody in FM Concepts), which was very useful to learn how to tie a person up tight but secure. Later I met David Kapture (one of the creators of Harmony Concepts) and Dominic Wolfe. We became good friends, and I learned a lot from them.
12. Describe your very first bondage shoot and then describe how you’ve seen your style/technique evolve since that first shoot?
The very first shoot was with a UKranian girl called Olivia. She was a fashion model (she made it to Vogue and other important magazines). The bondage involved in that shoot wasn't really tight. I didn't have much experience, and my camera work was not that good. She was super nice and polite, but she didn't want to shoot again... but was the first step.
13. Are there any riggers/producers who have influenced you over the years? And, if so, how?
Dan Corkill for sure. There's something about the work of Dan that I just love. His photos are completely amateur, no technique whatsoever, but somehow he manages to find the cutest damsels. They are always smiling and looking so innocent and cute, so I just love his work. Hollyrope is completely based on his concept. Other producers that influenced the original concept of Hollyrope are Imago Studios, Restrained Elegance, Beauties in Bondage and Bedroom Bondage (the first bondage site I ever saw). Later I got influenced by Dominic Wolfe and the site turned a little bit darker and kinkier, which I believe is a great blend of elements. You can notice that in the newer videos I've produced.
14. How do you respond to this statement: BDSM equals abuse of women?
Well, there's the other way around: Femdom, bondage sites where women are who tie men, dominatrix spanking dudes, etc... Some girls enjoy being subs, some girls enjoy being doms. Roles switch. There's no abuse anywhere, just people living the lifestye they love. Those that are not into the lifestyle shouldn't give an opinion about something they don't understand, or at least make their research and see the whole picture.
15. What advice would you give to a person who wants to begin a bondage website as a producer/photographer/rigger?
Be professional. Don't be a "guy with camera". Never lie to a girl in order to get her to a shoot. Don't hide information from her either. Tell her exactly what bondage is about. If the model is not completely sure about what she's doing and starts asking questions such as "where are you going to publish the pictures? or who is going to see the photos? or why do they want to see a girl tied up?" then forget about her, don't shoot with her. Bondage is a sexual fetish, an adult business, and if a girl is not sure about what she's doing, she might cause you a big problem in the future. Make them sign a release document, always keep a copy of their ID, and, of course, never shoot with a girl under 18 (or under 21, depending on your state or country). And if you're planning to make your living shooting bondage, get ready to dedicate your life to this 7 days a week. Work at least 8 hours a day in front of a computer screen, go to bed around 3 or 4 am everyday and don't expect to see a dollar earned for at least the first year... yes, success is not for free.
16. What else do you want your fans to know about you and your work?
I would just want to let people know that producing bondage is really complicated, expensive and risky, so every video you see was the result of a huge effort, from the producer and the models. So please respect that hard work by not stealing bondage videos, and I mean uploading copyrighted videos in those stream sites. These kind of sites are causing a huge damage to many people that worked hard to create a product. Those streaming sites are allowing an illegal activity, so that is not a victimless crime. Those sites are unscrupulous. Please don't support an illegal activity, and insted please support your favorite bondage producers and models by buying your videos and not sharing them. Thank you!
Well done Rob Ranger!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks a lot for the interesting insight.
I hope you'll like the next two interviews as well -- one with a fan who became a producer and then another DA artist. And, with luck a few more after that which will be equally interesting!!!
I was a little surprised that there were no ebonies in his stable...at least none in any of the photos he provided you.
When I ask producers to send me pics to include with the interviews, I am pretty unfairly limiting them in what they can send because I won't be able to use any images that have bondage or nudity in them thanks to 18 USC 2257. Few bondage producers take non-bondage images so they really have to dig deep to find pictures for me. That could very well explain why you see what you see in these images!
He's quite right in his depiction of the cautionnary steps before shooting with a new model, and this doesn't apply only to bondage sites (which I've never done myself): it will be the same with every professional modeling session, be it advertisement, fashion ot whatever.
Another man who seems pretty honest and decent, and another good job mister!
And your advice is very sound. In this day and age, models can never be too careful in an effort to stay safe from predators who use modeling and modeling want-ads as a hunting ground -- regardless of whether bondage is involved!
He has some really cute models too.
