CHAPTER 11

“They’re making a statement,” said the short, pudgy, desk sergeant that was more interested in his paper work than the three people standing on the other side of the counter. He did look up to point to the benches, “you’ll have to wait.” This was quickly followed by the familiar, electronically enhanced, hissing sound of a Zat gun that was uncoiling to fire. The sound came from under the big coat that was covering Teal’c. Daniel quickly grabbed his comrades arm and eyed the Jaffa to put away his weapon. Teal’ was naturally disturbed that he could not use it.

The Desk Sergeant heard it too, “what was that?”

Teal’c plainly stated, “it was in fact my Zatniketel.”

Daniel cut in with a smile, “a type of cell phone.”

“Oh,” the Sergeant replied as his eyes drifted back to the paper work, “well you’ll have to take it outside. No cell phones in here.”
Janet Frazier was not as calm as Daniel. She had to practically stand on her toes to see over the counter but she managed. She also managed to beat her fist on the Sergeant’s paper work, “we’re in something of a hurry here you know. Why is it you people are always pulling in law abiding citizens when there are young girls out there being kidnapped!”

The Sergeant actually gave the question some thought and then answered, “because we work for the government?”

That caused the Air Force Doctor to draw back, cross her arms, and pat her foot rapidly in frustration, “well he has me there.”

The large Jaffa with the fishing hat on did not have to stand on his toes to lean over the counter, “if my friends are harmed while imprisoned in your fortress I shall hold you personally responsible and promise to bring down upon you the revenge of Shal Ka Kee.”

Janet looked for an explanation and Daniel was busy hiding his face as he answered, “you don’t want to know.”

“I know you,” the Desk Sergeant said pointing his pen at Teal’c.  His face was now sharp, his eyes quick, and he was determined, “you’re T Man C aren’t you?!”

The Jaffa straightened his spine and his jacket, “indeed.” Teal’c gave a forced smile.

Now the policeman seemed excited, “T, I’ve got this girl friend and she…”

Fortunately for Daniel he spotted a familiar face walking hurriedly in the door with an arm full of papers. He and Janet stopped the Air Force officer in his tracks. Daniel then nodded to the papers in the hands of the frustrated looking military officer, “I hope those are what I think they are.”

Major Davis always seemed to be in a hurry. Daniel had always kind of figured the guy was on the fast track back at the Pentagon but, sometimes he seemed little more than an overused errand boy. Those errands were normally the dirt nobody else wanted to handle which, went a great deal towards explaining why he always looked to be in permanent need of a good laxative. “Somebody mind explaining to me how this happened?” Davis Demanded. “I mean Colonel O’Neill is one thing… but Major Carter too?”

Daniel shrugged, “all I know is what I told General Hammond.”

Davis seemed peeved. He lowered his voice but was still very stern, “Doctor Jackson I don’t think you realize that the US Attorney’s office is preparing a felony kidnapping case against Colonel O’Neill. They’re getting ready to file abetting charges on Major Carter.”

This was not what Janet wanted to hear, “well that can’t possibly be the case Major. After all they were both on the base with lots of witnesses and this doesn’t get us one little bit closer to finding my daughter.”

“One second Janet,” Daniel tried to remain calm since that would make him somewhat unique in this crowd, “now Major you did manage to stall them right?”

“Oh,” Davis suddenly remembered it almost as an afterthought, “well yeah I did what General West always did and spelled the Colonel’s name wrong on all the paperwork. That should keep things on hold for a little while.”

Janet grabbed the Major by his regulation jacket and shook him, “where is my little girl!”

“Doctor!” Davis broke the grip and straightened his uniform, “that’s not for here but we think…” Davis lowered his voice, “there’s a lot going on in Washington right now that you two don’t know about.  I’ll…”

“Excuse me,” Daniel said holding up a finger. He looked from one side of the lobby to the next, “where did Teal’c go?”
