1)  Describe your very first times tied up both off camera and on camera?

I remember my first bondage experience but it wasn't rope bondage.  I was booked to do a glamour shoot.  The photographer asked if I wanted to do some bondage.  I didn't know what bondage was but I wasn't going to admit that so I said "Sure!"  He put some leather cuffs on me and it was ok.  So I got online (back then it was the usenet newsgroups) and started looking for bondage shoots. I quickly discovered there was MUCH more to it than that.  I liked the challenge of it, pushing myself physically and mentally.

2)   What is it about your work that you think makes you so popular with your fans?

I don't really know what it is that people like or don't like.  My work has changed so much over the years.  Perhaps it's that I'm always changing things up that keeps people interested

3)  Do you enjoy the pain elements that factor into some aspects of bondage modeling?  And, if so, why?

My official answer to that is bondage, when done correctly, should never cause pain.  If you're talking about mixing SM elements with pain, it is something I enjoyed at one time.   In general I didn't like bondage and pain together.  The bondage was often distracting, where for some I'm sure it enhances the experience.

4)  To what do you attribute your longevity in the Internet bondage modeling world?

Persistence!

5)  What has bondage modeling taught you about yourself and other people?

Traveling all over the world by myself and working made me stronger for sure.  It showed me I could do almost anything I set my mind to.  It taught me to read people.

6)   Are you very selective about with whom you work?  How do you decide who to model for or with?

I generally look at their site and see how difficult the bondage is, how the women are portrayed, the words that are used to describe the women.  I also check their twitter feeds to see how they interact with people, the things they post.  Are they gracious and kind or an entitled asshole?  If someone seems nice, I'll work with them.

7)  With the 50 Shades of Grey movie bringing bondage into the mainstream media, some people have commented that BDSM represents an abusive relationship. How would you respond to people who make statements like that?

I would say that that particular story does show an abusive relationship. Some BDSM relationships are abusive, just as some vanilla relationships are abusive. The rise of porn infused fetish isn't helping as it often shows an unhealthy version. When I started out, the safe word was holy.  I was directed not too long ago on a shoot to keep hitting the sub after he used his safe word so we could see how much he could really take. That's not ok.  People see that scene, they see the sub being hit after his safe word and they think it's ok.  They think if they hit someone after they use their safe word it makes them more of a bad ass.  The lines between fantasy and reality are being blurred in a way that's not positive or healthy.

8)   Have you, at any time in your modeling career, ever felt exploited?

Not very often as I have generally held my ground and not taken anyone's shit.  However, I did a shoot in Detroit that made me feel awful. It was set up by someone who I knew, liked and trusted.  The bondage was hard and painful but that wasn't the problem. I would do the positions for as long as I could, often pushing myself to take them longer than I should have.  When he would have to finally untie me because I was totally numb he would try to make me feel badly.  "No one else has ever needed to be out of my bondage before", as if it was my fault.  The producer treated me like I wasn't a person.  I was just a piece of meat being shoved around.  He never asked if something was too tight, if I was ok, etc.

At one point I started crying during the shoot while tied up, which is very unlike me. He didn't react.  It escalated and I was hysterical.  At no point did he ask if I was ok.  He just kept rolling the camera.  After he untied me I looked in the mirror and my face was covered in my mascara. It wasn't just a tiny run here and there, the majority of my face was black with makeup.  There was no way he didn't realize I was upset.  He just didn't care.  When I told the person who set me up with the shoot what happened she said "yeah, he makes everybody cry." That would have been good information to have upfront so I could have made an informed decision.  And really what kind of a person keeps sending girls to someone who is treating them that way?  I don't if she got kickbacks or is just a horrible person but I definitely felt exploited during that shoot and for a long time after.

9)  What do you think are the best and worst aspects of the adult industry?

The best part is that you can meet some amazing people.  I love how more women have taken control and are doing their own thing.  They're learning how to tie, shoot, edit, write code where before we were just models.  I love how creative some people are and that many of us can learn from each other, feed off each other's energies.  I've covered some of the worst aspects in previous questions.

10)  How does the bondage modeling industry compare now to how it was when you began your career as a bondage model?

When I started it was very tame.  There were tons of yahoo groups that only wanted fully clothed women bound.  It was more innocent.  Now everyone wants naked, explicit, toys, vibrators.  It's changed into something else.

11)  Out of all the bondage shoots you've done, which was the most memorable?  And which was the most fun?  And please tell us why they were most memorable and fun.

I've done so many it's hard to pick just one.  I will say that my favourite person to work with is Ashley Renee.  We have had good chemistry since day 1.  I love the scenes we do.  As a sub I would say the work I did with Cory "Mr T" Thompson.  Until that point the bondage work I had done was damsel in distress.  He showed me it could also be glamourous and sexy.  I felt powerful in his shoots even though I was bound.

12)   Is there a shoot you have not done yet that is on your "bucket list"?  If yes, please tell us what it is.

I've pretty much done everything I wanted to do though I occasionally fantasize about being suspended from hooks.

13)  What is the kinkiest thing you've ever done off-camera?

I prefer to keep my private sex life private ;)

14)   What advice do you have for models who hope to enjoy the longevity you've enjoyed in the bondage modeling industry?

Pace yourself and stick to your limits.  Never be afraid to walk off a set. Being labeled difficult isn't nearly as bad as hating yourself the next day.  Show up on time, communicate clearly, support the people who hire you by promoting the content they shoot of you on social media.  Say please and thank you. Be nice to your fans and producers.  Without them, there is no you.

15)   What is the source of your creativity?

There isn't any one source.  I used to get ideas when I was on tour, spending hours driving in my car with no radio.  I carried a little notebook then and would write, sketch positions, etc.  Usually they just pop in my head.  Sometimes it's inspired by something but most of the time it's completely random.

16)    What else does Julie Simone want her fans to know about her and her work?

I self-published a book last year called "Gagged".  It's all head shots of people wearing a variety of gags.  I also have a tshirt line and a necktie line, all of which can be purchased here : www.etsy.com/shop/JulieSimone

My members' site turns 16 this year! There's a huge archive that has all my work as a rope bottom, as well as new updates being added twice a week.  www.JulieSimone.com

My clips store has individual scenes and dvd downloads and is updated every day : Store 9861

I also have a DVD store which has some great sales going on right now : www.videos4sale.com/9861

If you'd like to follow me on social media my twitter is JulieSimone7 and my instagram is julie_simone

Lastly I would like to thank you, Rob, for this yahoo group and for giving people a safe space in which to share their work and fantasies.

Julie Simone

The first time I met Julie Simone was back in 2003 and it didn't go so well, but several years again, we met for a second time and, since then, it's been great, especially since she introduced me to an amazing French café in NYC that serves the best breakfasts I've ever had!

The photo above is copyrighted by Julie Simone and she chose it specifically for me to use with this interview!

Another great interview.  I've been following Ms. Simone for a good long time (back in those usenet days), and I greatly enjoyed hearing how the industry and product has changed.  It sure has!

Thanks!

Thanks for the nice words. She has always been very candid when I've spoken with her so I had no doubt that she'd tell it like it is in the interview!

Julie's responses made this the best interview you've done yet, Rob. Honest, thoughtful, and perceptive. I particularly appreciated her comments on the way BDSM is being presented to the vanilla audience and agree completely. Moving towards a world where safewords are ignored is not going to benefit anyone, even the sadistic bastards who push people's limits.

Her experience with the exploitative producer makes me long for a site that lists assholes like this, so that people would know who NOT to support. I wouldn't want to spend a nickel on that guy's product in the hopes that he leaves the business (and falls down a bottomless pit and dies, but that's another story).

She has been in the business since the late 1990s and has seen a lot in that time. I loved that she mentioned how Mr T influenced her and that he was one of her more memorable experiences. He was a real talent and I can only imagine what he would have created if he was alive today.

I don't blame her for not naming names (why risk a slander or libel suit?) but I bet people are aware of her experience.  Word travels fast when stuff like that happens.

I'm glad you think it's the best of the interviews although it makes it a challenge to top it going forward  :)

I wouldn't want Julie (or anyone else, for that matter) to risk exposure to such a suit. But I do think a site that allowed models and customers to know which producers to avoid would be most welcome. The webmaster of such a site should make every attempt to verify the information being provided without having to reveal the names of the models who've suffered. You might just be the guy to do that, Rob, with your legal expertise and relationship to several models already well established. Just a suggestion, of course. ;p

Thanks for the vote of confidence but I already have plenty to do  :)  I'm pretty confident that most models know which producers to stay away from if they're veterans and I hope new models would know to check references and bring escorts to a shoot (or at least ask to bring one).  It'd be hard to verify an allegations because it become one side vs. the other and, as a judge once told me, there are two sides to every story  :)  But I do appreciate the confidence!

The telling thing about Julie's horrific experience is that she was sent to this producer by a friend she knew and trusted, and still wasn't warned about the harm to come. While I'm sure many models do share their horror stories with each other, it's apparent that some still don't know who to avoid until it's too late. And even with the models sharing their cautionary tales with each other, there's still no way for potential customers to know which producers need to be put out of business until/unless these bastards are exposed as the sociopaths they are.

I understand your reluctance to be involved, Rob, but I would hope someone who has the friendship and confidence of a significant portion of the models working today would want to get behind this.

It's a very slippery slope because the law of slander/libel/defamation makes it a per se offense (meaning damages are presumed) if you make any slanderous comment that injures a person with regard to his livelihood (i.e., by urging people not to work with him because he's a bad apple or he did something improper). Without knowing 100% of the facts, there's no way to know for sure what happened. I've known Julie since 2003 and she has a lot of credibility with me, but the producer might be able to explain away what she says or just deny it. With no one else present to verify one or the other side, you just don't know.

What Yahoo group?

One thing I admire about her is how she's gone from typically skinny/model sized to being shaped like an actual woman and has maintained her success.

I do like her work, but some of her answers worry me about being exploited etc.  The whole thing for me is the bondage should be about trusting the person you are with to do the right thing and communication to make everything safe. OFC in alot of my stories girsl end up tied not in consent but that is the nature of the stories.

I think one of my favourite Julie moments was when she tied her self up in a Harmony DVD she is very talented, there is however abother scene I saw her in where she was in a very strict set of restraints that looked to cutting off her breathing, I have never been able to watch that one all the way through. I know she was safe and the director could be heard asking her if she was ok but the predicament was too intense for me.

Great interview and it shos a balanced side to the life of these models, we need to keep showing the better side of this lifestyle rather then the abusive as that is how the media mostly wants to portray it making all of us look like some kind of nutjob

I'm glad you read the interview and took the time to prepare that detailed response. I agree (and I bet most others do too) that bondage is supposed to be consensual and trusting when it involves people in the lifestyle or models at photo shoots, but, as some of these interviews show (and as I know from conversations I've had with people in the industry), it doesn't always work out that way. Julie and others repeatedly make the point about checking references. Models can also talk to other models or ask to bring an escort to a shoot. Unfortunately, there are lots of predators out there.

I think it IS important to show the better side of the lifestyle, but you can't hide the fact that there is an abusive side to it too at times -- a side that is not condoned, of course, but it does exist. The key is to show that the abusive side is an aberration and not the rule.

Great interview, you got some really good answers from her.  Nice work.

But why didn't your first meeting go very well?

We met at BondCon in 2003 for the first time.  BondCon was the predecessor to FetishCon that used to be held in NYC, near LaGuardia Airport.  I introduced myself to her (we had a mutual friend) but she was in a pretty bad mood at the time because, if I recall correctly, of something a producer said to her. She pretty much grumbled a "hi" and then blew me off. A few years later, she contacted me to see if I wanted to meet because she had something to discuss. I rarely say "no" if a model asks me to meet, so I met her and once we were in the restaurant, I said, "It's nice to meet you." Without hesitating, she said to me, "We met once before. Sorry about that." And that's how bygones become bygones!

She gave good and honest answers because after years in the business, she's grown strong and tough and confident. And she really does speak her mind all the time!  I'm glad you liked the interview! :)

Thank you both! It's really cool to have read so many of these. Every interview is different, but some names and themes come up over and over again. I think you could publish a 'Bondage Modeling for Dummies' based on all the info you've gotten! :D

I'm glad you enjoyed this one! Like I told RP, Julie Simone has been around for a long time and the industry has really made her tough and independent. I actually worked with a model do a sort of primer for would-be bondage models. Does the Yahoo address you used to send me your interview still work? I can send it to you if you like -- its a PDF file. I think you'd find it very interesting.

And if you like different interviews, next week's will be from the other side of the camera because I'm going to begin posting some interviews with producers too. Two weeks from today though will be Kylie's. She sent it back to me a few nights ago!
